Christmas Chicks Night In at Restor'd Worthy Goods

Last night we had a ball at the Christmas 'Chicks Night In' at Restor'd Worthy Goods in Shellharbour.

It is so lovely to see our lovely friends at Restor'd and all of their lovely friends and customers getting together to spread the cheer and raise funds for charity.  After all that's what Restor'd is all about.

We were so luck to be able to introduce ourselves and talk about what it is that 'Dwell South Coast' does - namely decorate, style, source homewares for clients and create wonderful colour palettes for the inside and outside of homes.

Our theme for this gathering was 'Christmas Table Top' and how to create a stunning festive table with gathered and foraged finds.

Thanks so much Shani, Eddy, Beth, Jhett and the team at Restor'd, we send you all the very best for Christmas and the New Year - see you soon xxx

Interior Design Stores - IKEA

It probably comes as no surprise that IKEA would have to be one of the world's most popular and largest interior design stores on the planet.

Founded in 1944 by Ingvar Kamprad IKEA quickly established itself as a leader in Scandinavian design.  The name IKEA is created by Ingvar's initials followed by the initials of the farm and village he grew up in - Elmtaryd and Agunnaryd.

The IKEA concept is that great interior design should be affordable, sustainable and available to everyone wherever you may live and whatever your style may be.  With interior stores worldwide there's no excuse for a shabby home!  IKEA has a family of designers who constantly design and produce product according to current market demand with an eye to the future.

Hemnes Chest of Drawers

Hemnes Chest of Drawers

There are many iconic IKEA pieces and many homes have at least one item from their huge range.  I've thrown a few classics into this post that have been around for ages and just don't seem to date.  I know I have a few classic pieces myself and when mixed in with op shop finds, vintage furniture and modern purchases they just seem to fit.

Malm Double Bed Frame

IKEA designers take into account form, function, quality, cost and sustainability when creating new pieces to the IKEA range.  I've found that the kitchen and bathroom pieces are great when renovating, their price point and quality suit a renovators budget!

IKEA have 2 stores in Sydney, Ryde and Tempe (my favourite and closest) with another due to open soon in Marsden Park.

Scoundrels & Scavengers - the great bus tour!!

Recently Dwell South Coast hosted it's first Mystery Bus Tour.  It was a great day out visiting our favourite second hand furniture and homewares shopping spots south of Wollongong.  Along came 10 enthusiastic shoppers who delightedly grabbed themselves some bargains along the way.

We started at Restored Worthy Goods in Shellharbour before heading off to Rare Find in Warilla and then hit Port Kembla - a treasure trove of interesting little shops full of personality and great finds.  Our faves here were Wentworth Emporium, Ambling Home and Restore & Upcycled (but there were more too).

Lunch was at The Foundry run by the Salvation Army and it was just delicious.  After lunch we roamed the streets finding more bargains and found a couple of our ladies sipping champagne in one of the pubs - brave huh?  Camp Leader had to round them up and muster them back to the bus so we could head on home, stopping at Cafe 10 for a bit of bartering with owner Sol, a character and a half!

Dwell recommends you discover the amazing and clever vintage shops on your doorstep soon or come along with us on our next shopping tour - satisfaction guaranteed!

Warm Your Home with Art

Kathy Karas, Della Hodgett & Karen Butler live and paint in and around the Illawarra and Shoalhaven.  They have combined forces to present a joint body of work at Art House Berry. We went along to the opening of their exhibition to meet the artists, mingle with friends of Art house & to collect ideas for Dwell Clients. Below are some examples of their work and a a short introduction written by Katrina from Art House.

Della Hodgett is a versatile and eclectic artist who can paint and draw in most mediums but particularly likes to work in oil. Della lives on the South Coast of New South Wales where she delights in the familiar lush greens and blues of coastal sea, hills and trees. The opportunities for landscape painting are endless but she also likes to work figuratively, drawing on her numerous pen and ink sketches for inspiration.

Karen is an emerging artist from Shellharbour, NSW specialising in printmaking and painting. Her art is inspired by the beauty of the natural world, particularly the interplay of light, shadow and colour and their effects on the emotions. She is drawn towards botanical themes, still life and the flora and fauna of the Australian bush. She also enjoys painting in oils and acrylic, watercolours, collage and mixed media.

South Coast artist Kathy Karas paints in oil, acrylic and watercolour the scenery of the stunning coastal and rural areas between Austinmer and Ulladulla. Her style can be described as modern impressionist with an interest in a wide range of subject matter including still life, landscape, figurative and old and historical buildings. Kathy’s paintings are in collections within Australia, Canada, The United States, France, the UK and Japan.

Art House is on Albert Street in Berry. It showcases Artists from the Shoalhaven and Illawarra area ... and is currently open every day while the above exhibition continues. Katrina and John will be travelling oversea at the end of June so Dwell South Coast will handle all enquiries during July - call us for an appointment.

Autumn in Coledale & Thirroul

It is closed monday and tuesday so avoid the disappointment and venture here on the other days or you can always phone Karen on 0411 480 365 for an appointment .  Cocoon sell the unusual, eclectic and primitive which includes furniture, gifts & recycled glass

Cabana Jo's in Berry, NSW South Coast

The yellow shop called 'Cabana Jo's' is found off the main street of Berry very near The Tea Shop and Art House Berry - Shop 1, 68 Albert Street. There seems to be a common theme of our favourite shops being layered with finds!

Jo has had her business for over 10 years and has a good eye for trends and the unusual in homewares, decorator items, lighting, candles and jewellery. The range is diverse with locally made & hand-poured soy candles from Mason & Soy to Ahoy Trader, Ourlieu, Noosa Amsterdam chunks, Bam Bam bowls, Cultiver Linen ... and so much more.

'The Milk Factory Gallery' in The Southern Highlands

Shirley and Jim Becke of The Milk Factory Gallery have kindly given us permission to use their images within our blog - thank you :)

We had a terrific day in Bowral last week but ran out of time! So we revisited two days later and started our day out with The Milk Factory. Allow plenty of time to explore the space as there is plenty to see, much to 'ooo and aah' over and then there is the Cafe so you can mull over your artistic purchases and to re-fuel.

What a cultural, creative 'hit' first thing in the morning!

One of our favourites are Gillie and Marc.

As husband and wife, Gillie and Marc are Australian contemporary artists who collaborate to create art as one, applying the iconic imagery of the dog/human hybrid to celebrate the powerful spiritual relationship that exists between man and animal.

With a 20 year history of collaboration, Gillie and Marc’s works (paintings and sculptures) have received acclaim worldwide and are held in collections both nationally and internationally ... we would like one of these in our foyer ... when we get an office !

Greg Hyde's paintings are featured below. His work is multi-layered, charming and highly detailed ... some with a touch of humour. Greg has a solo exhibition running May 31st to June 30th with a collection of paintings, etchings and sketches.

Steve Harris is self taught and lives locally at beautiful Jervis Bay. As I don't quite have the words to describe breath-taking work I have copied this ..

Harris is a master of understated realism which in turn evokes its own sense of 'atmosphere' and contemplative mood.

We really love his work.

Delicate threads are densely stitched into freeform sculptures that are then pinned to paper or set in resin - amazing! Below is the work of Meredith Woolnough ... look closely and you can see how she is influenced by filigree and lacework.... beautiful skeletal frameworks of flora and fauna.

Art House Berry

John and Katrina Underwood established Art House Berry late 2013 (after finding retirement a little dull!) Their vibrant Gallery is housed in Shop 3, 68 Albert Street in Berry, NSW. It's the blue shop set between the yellow shop + the red shop! It is the newest Gallery in town with a wide range of Art work predominately from the local area.

Art House Berry is home to many talented artists BUT Jane Madison just ROCKS!
