Apartment Living

Apartment living in your favourite city? Please yourself, create a sanctuary, home is your place, kick off your shoes, wrap yourself in a silk kimono and sip Proseco while you plan that 10 day shopping trip to NY.  Below is a lot of luxe! Yes some pieces have silly price tags and seem a little OTT but I say mix it up ... shop high end for a key piece, shop Ikea if you can bare it (I can't), scour Ebay, search on Gumtree, seek out interesting art work or delicious prints from Print Darling , go to your local garage sale. Start collecting clever pieces, think outside of the square to create this look. Teamed with almost black floorboards and you have made your mark on your abode and created somewhere beautiful to dwell. Still can't mange to pull it together? then chat to me. Below is a little inspiration created for Ms G 🖤

What do you love?

What’s your style? Lots of people say they don’t know …. that’s ok! Most peeps know what they don’t like so that’s a good starting point. From stating what you can’t stand you often are able to figure out what you do like even if it doesn’t get a specific style name! Who wants to live in a categorised box anyway!

In the Library

Dwell's Library {always expanding}

So why does anyone buy a book. You like the Author? The writing is easy to read & informative? It's relevant? The cover is pretty? The photographs 'get you'!  It looks good on the coffee table? It's overall aesthetically pleasing .... Um yep, CHECK.

Get yourself a book .... read don't scroll ;)

One of my Favourites - Eccentric Homes

Rebellion?

I wonder if my most recent + again renewed interest in bohemian & eccentric styling in homes stems from a rebellion against main stream, commercialism, Scandi and trends. We've seen a whole array of deer heads recently .... paper ones, cardboard ones, wooden ones and before that we had owls, flamingoes & pineapples - lol that was fun to write!

So here's an addition to Dwell's Library, 'ECCENTRIC HOMES' .... by the way this style is one that you cannot go out and create in a flash. It's ever evolving, gathering momentum, a story of your life really :)

Bright Coloured Dining Rooms

If you are going to add colour to any room then the Dining Room would be a great place to go wild!  What a great room to enjoy a meal, chat and have a good laugh with friends and family over dinner and make memories.  So why not create a great atmosphere and stimulate conversation (and the appetite) with a beautiful bright coloured dining room?

You could add colour to the walls with paint or wallpaper.  A rug is a subtle (or bold) way to add colour and the starting point of a fantastic colour scheme.

Maybe it's artwork that sets the theme, or your table settings with flowers to compliment your colour palette.

Scoundrels & Scavengers - the great bus tour!!

Recently Dwell South Coast hosted it's first Mystery Bus Tour.  It was a great day out visiting our favourite second hand furniture and homewares shopping spots south of Wollongong.  Along came 10 enthusiastic shoppers who delightedly grabbed themselves some bargains along the way.

We started at Restored Worthy Goods in Shellharbour before heading off to Rare Find in Warilla and then hit Port Kembla - a treasure trove of interesting little shops full of personality and great finds.  Our faves here were Wentworth Emporium, Ambling Home and Restore & Upcycled (but there were more too).

Lunch was at The Foundry run by the Salvation Army and it was just delicious.  After lunch we roamed the streets finding more bargains and found a couple of our ladies sipping champagne in one of the pubs - brave huh?  Camp Leader had to round them up and muster them back to the bus so we could head on home, stopping at Cafe 10 for a bit of bartering with owner Sol, a character and a half!

Re-visiting Vignettes

There is nothing more Dwell South Coast loves than creating vignettes. We thought we would bring you a stylish selection of some favourite vignettes all with a similar colour palette - Sharlene likes dark & moody and Tonya likes colourful & eclectic.

The images above are free and easy. Playing with colour, shape & pattern can be fun ... be adventurous .. free yourself from limitations .. mix it up. Tell yourself 'you can't get it wrong' - it helps!

Thinking outside the square is usually required when creating original displays.  Above books are used to create height and the exposed page edges add lightness and contrast.

Not all vignettes need to be complicated, in the image above less is more.  It goes without saying that you always need to consider scale and proportion but sometimes simplicity is perfection.

Shelves are a different story... these can be a little tricky.  At Dwell we find sticking to a few simple rules is the key to creating successful vignettes when it comes to bookcases, mantels and shelves - see if these tips help....

1.  Collect items in varying shades and tones of the one colour

2.  Use objects with a similar theme

3.  Contrast textures, heights and shapes

4.  Connect each item to the other by overlapping slightly

5.  Create depth by bringing items forward

6.  Flowers and foliage add interest and softness

7.  Construct your vignettes within a 'triangle' shape starting at the top and working down

Can you see the 'triangle' shape in the vignette above?

Sometimes your vignette may incorporate furniture as well.  In the image below each shelf has been carefully thought through as has the placement of the chair and lamp.  The result is a perfectly balanced arrangement of items through the use of contrast, shape, colour & tone, size, height, theme and the golden 'triangle' rule!

Oh Deer Me...

It would seem that the trend for anything 'Deer' is here to stay for a while.  I's been around a few years now but is showing no signs of slackening off just yet.  You either love it, hate it, or just don't get it but I have to admit it has a certain rustic charm.  It suits country houses, contemporary homes and very much has a scandi vibe about it.  So with that in mind I have collected a few 'Deer' themed items that just could make it into your heart and home...

1. Gentlemen Deer Cushion Cover, choosy.com.au $39

2. Ancona 6 light Antler Chandelier, Schotts Home Emporium $795

3. White Deer Jumper, sagesydney.com.au $45

4. Deer Print (frame not included), ANCHORandVINE on Etsy $7.71

5. Antique Gold Plated Deer Ring, Wildfox $50

6. Red Deer Stag Organic fabric, Birch approx $13 per metre

7. Best Friend Stag Head, Juniper Hearth in Berry, $149

Cosy Country Decor

As we slowly creep through Autumn towards Winter I love to cosy up the house in readiness for cooler days and nights.  A scroll through some favourite images of eclectic country decor has me feeling not so sad that summer has come and gone and has me looking forward to spending time indoors.  How are you going to spend your winter?  Out and about enjoying the crisp cool air or tucked up inside beside the fire with a good book and endless movies...

Flowers brighten up any living space even in winter, if you haven't got the real thing in your garden why not opt for silk flowers, they are so realistic these days you can hardly tell the difference.

Rugs can help warm up a room.  Persian style rugs introduce colour and pattern as well as defining 'zones' within your space.  Timeless and elegant, they suit most types of decor.  And don't forget throw blankets to keep you warm as well as to add some interest to your sofa.

Or you may like a little 'granny' rag rug, don't be afraid to layer your rugs (as long as they aren't too thick or fluffy) for a relaxed look.  However you do it, enjoy your South Coast winter, it won't be around long and before you know it summer skies will be overhead again.

Trend Alert - Flamingo Fever

You probably are already aware of the latest trend - flamingo fever!  Love it or hate it - it's taking over.  I kind of like it's quirkiness, I used to love seeing them parked on peoples front lawns in the 70's along with the big butterfly on the wall next to the front door.  I remember thinking that the people who lived in THOSE houses were so exotic and must have been very well travelled to even know such birds existed!  So how do you use this current trend?  Well of course it's totally up to you but the image below gave me a little inspiration...

Love that eclectic look, so I pulled together a few items and threw them into a mood board… now it's up to you to take what you like or leave what you like but my favourite would have to be number 2 - how cute is that outfit???
